WHAT WE DO

Joey’s Song fights epilepsy with music in memory of Joseph Gomoll, who died in 2010 just shy of his fifth birthday after suffering a debilitating form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome.

Our multi-day music event called #FreezingMan supports families by raising funds to support the critical research needed to find treatments and cures.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Epilepsy claims more lives than breast cancer every year.

  • It affects more people than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and Parkinson’s disease combined.

  • The World Health Organization says epilepsy is the most common serious brain disorder worldwide.

  • Epilepsy research receives less than half of a percent out of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) $30 billion annual medical research budget, despite NIH being the main source of U.S. dollars for epilepsy research.

HOW JOEY'S SONG RAISES FUNDS

Our non-profit foundation uses music events as our primary fundraising vehicle because of Joey's love of music. Each year, we host a benefit concert that features multi-platinum recording artist and three-time Grammy winner Butch Vig and his band, The Know-It-All Boyfriends (aka KIAB), who serve as a house band to a steady stream of musical stars.

WHO WE SUPPORT

The majority of our epilepsy and seizure-related grant funding goes to the Joseph Gomoll Research Grant, which is being used at Northwestern University in exciting ways. Dr. Carvill's Lab at Northwestern uses gene discovery and molecular biology to identify new epilepsy treatments. Its aim is to identify the causes of epilepsy in order to develop a personalized approach to care and treatment.

CURE Epilepsy is the leading nongovernmental agency committed to funding patient-centered epilepsy research. It administers the Joseph Gomoll Research grant on our behalf. We also bestow other pediatric-related grants throughout the year.
