Joey’s Song is a charity our family started in 2010 shortly after Joey, our son and brother, died after his battle with epilepsy his entire life. Our mission is to raise money for the “next family” that has to fight this terrible disease. Joey’s Song raises funds to help support research to find more effective treatments and hopefully someday a cure for seizure disorders and to help fund respite care services for families with special need children like Joe.
We hold our events in December / early January each year because that is the “off season” for many musicians. They are usually not touring or in the studio. Historically, we start getting our sponsors lined up in May each year. This timing has hurt us in the past because by that time, many charitable giving budgets for companies are spent or spoken for. So, while we are still putting the finishing touches on our benefit on January 9th, 2021, we are reaching out to potential sponsors and asking them to set money aside in their 2021 budget to sponsor our event.
Next year’s benefit will be our 8th event. Each year, multi-platinum recording artist and 3-time Grammy winner Butch Vig brings his band of musical misfits (The Know-It-All Boyfriends, aka KIAB) to put on a one-of-a-kind concert. The KIAB serve as house band to a steady stream of musical stars. While we don’t know yet who our guest stars will be in 2021, if past is prologue, we should be in for another stellar line up. Over the years our performers have included Brian Ray (guitarist in Paul McCartney’s band), Miguel Cervantes (lead in the Chicago production of Hamilton), Sam Llanas ( of the BoDeans), Rhett Miller (of The Old 97’s), Chris Collingwood ( from Fountains of Wayne), Cory Chisel (Grammy nominated singer-songwriter) and many others.
After the December 2019 concert, we have raised over $420,000 cumulatively. We are also 100% volunteer, with no paid staff. You can be assured that your sponsor dollars and any money you help us raise at the event, will all go where it is needed.
Your sponsor dollars will help us meet our three targets for next year’s event:
ONE: Our goal is to raise $10,000 for C.U.R.E. ( ) to fund direct studies into Dravets Syndrome. Dravets is the disease that afflicted Joey.
TWO: We are targeting $10,000 to help Gio’s Garden ( ), a respite care facility in Middleton that helps families with special needs children, to fund their building and infrastructure for 2 months with just our donation.
THREE: We are adding the Epilepsy Foundation of Wisconsin to our preferred charities list to help promote client services for all that are battling epilepsy. That target donation is $10,000.
The annual Joey’s Song Benefit is a fun-filled, slightly raucous affair. We have a ton of fun, with some truly world class musicians. The night is uplifting and a whole lotta fun! By supporting us Joey's Song, you help assure that we can keep helping those that deserve a chance at a cure and the ability to receive the care that they need.
